Author Introduction

Ah Bing (August 17, 1893 - December 4, 1950), formerly known as Hua Yanjun, was born in Wuxi. He was a folk musician and a Taoist priest of his school. He was blinded by an eye disease.

 Ah Bing studied Taoist music assiduously, kept improving, and extensively absorbed folk music tunes. He composed and performed more than 270 pieces of folk music in his life.  His father, Hua Qing, was the master of the Taoist temple of the three Qing dynasties in Wuxi, who was good at Taoist music. His mother died when he was four years old, and he was raised by his aunt.  At the age of 8, his father was a small Taoist priest in Lei Zun Dian.  Began to read in the private school for 3 years, after learning from his father drums, flute, erhu, pipa and other musical instruments.  12 years old has been able to play a variety of musical instruments, and often participate in worship repentance（拜忏）, chanting（诵经）, playing music and other activities.  At the age of 18 by Wuxi Taoist music as a performer expert.  Abing died on 4 December 1950 at the age of 57.

Creation Background

The work ＇The Moon Reflected In Er-quan＇ was recorded by musician Yang Yinliu in the early 1950s according to Abing's performance, recording and notation, and soon became popular all over the country.  From beginning to end, the music revealed the thoughts and feelings of a blind artist who tasted the bitterness and pain of the world. The work shows the unique folk performance skills and style, as well as unparalleled profound artistic conception, showing the unique charm of Chinese erhu art, which broadens the expression of erhu art, and has won the ＇20th Century Chinese Music Classic Award. ＇（“20世纪华人音乐经典作品奖”）＇The Moon Reflected In Er-quan＇is an excellent work in the treasure house of Chinese national music culture, which enjoys a good reputation at home and abroad, and is one of the treasures of Chinese folk instrumental music.

The tone of 'The Moon Reflected In Er-quan' has a deep relationship with folk music and opera music in the Jiangnan region. Give people a very friendly feeling. Its unique musical structure leaves a deep impression on people.The song ＇The Moon Reflected In Er-quan＇uses a lyrical musical language to depict the scenery of the mountain spring and the author's infinite and profound emotions. The entire piece is divided into six sections and undergoes five variations. After the short introduction, the rhythm is set up from Shang Yin to Jiao. Afterwards, pause briefly on the micro, horn, and tone, and end with Rongyin. The slightly wavy melody line resembles the author sitting by the spring contemplating past events. The second line has only two bars and appears six times in the entire piece. It starts with the high octave at the end of the first sentence. The national palace music swirled up and down, breaking the silence ahead and beginning to soar, revealing the author's infinite emotions. When entering the third sentence, the melody flows in the high pitched area and a new rhythm element appears, with a soft yet strong melody and more emotional excitement. The theme gradually shifts from calm and profound at the beginning to excited and uplifting, deeply revealing the author's inner life feelings and tenacious will to live. His frequent use of Zhuo Zhu in his portrayal of Taichung made the music tinge with a hint of sadness, which is the emotional expression of a blind artist who has tasted the bitterness of the world.

Musical Influence

"The Moon Reflected In Er-quan" has been highly praised at home and abroad.  The great conductor Seiji Ozawa, after conducting the concerto ＇The Moon Reflected In Er-quan,＇said, "This kind of erhu music should be listened to on one's knees."  French President Francois Mitterrand only liked this erhu all his life.  Among the many sounds sent into space, China received only one, "The Moon Reflected In Er-quan."  On the 10th anniversary of National Day in 1959, the China Foreign Cultural Association gave it to international friends as one of the representatives of Chinese national music.  In 1985, Midea was recorded in the United States and ranked at the top of the 11 popular Chinese songs in the United States.
