In the golden autumn of 2018, Li Chengwai, a part-time professor of Wuhan University and director of the Party History Research Office of Xianning city, went to the leading academic institution —Oxford University with an academic exchange group "Research on the Role and Position of the War against Japanese Aggression in the global Anti-Fascist Countries." They visited the Center for Chinese History and Business School. Meanwhile, the library of the University of Oxford was exhibiting the Xiangyang Lake Culture Series and Into Xianning —the picture book edited by Xianning Daily etc.
At the symposium, Li Chengwai made a keynote speech on "Mr. Xiao Qian's Important Contribution to the War Propaganda of World War II in Europe", introducing Xiao Qian, a famous Chinese writer, translator and journalist, who wrote a large number of newsletters during his tenure as a war correspondent of Ta Kung Pao ( The newspaper, founded on June 17, 1902, is the oldest Chinese-language newspaper still in circulation in the world). He reviewed Mr. Xiao Qian's famous piece and elaborated on how “courage , talent, righteousness” energy was demonstrated by the young author in those days.
Gerry Takamura, a British history scholar, said she hoped to send visiting scholars to further exchanges in the future.
Li Chengwai lectured about Xiao Qian's past in Oxford University
"Xiao Qian, a famous Chinese writer and journalist, was a member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Director of the Central Museum of Literature and History. From The Complete Collection of Xiao Qian and The Research Album of Xiao Qian , as well as related prose collections and biographies, we can learn about Xiao Qian, as the only journalist from mainland China in the European battlefield during World War II, reported the war situation in a timely and accurate way. At the University of Oxford, the scholar Li Chengwai from Xianning city recounted the unique contribution of Chinese war correspondent Xiao Qian to the propaganda of World War II.
Who is Li Chengwai? He is a member of the World Association of Chinese Literature, the Chinese Writers Association, the Hubei Provincial Association of Writers. Additionally, he served as the president of the Hubei Xiangyang Lake Culture Research Association, a academic leader of a Key research base construction project called Hubei modern humanities resources survey and research center, a graduate instructor of Party School of Hubei Provincial Committee . In recent years, as the first researcher of the May 7 Cadre School in China, he has been invited to give lectures at the Graduate School of the Central Party School, the Grand Lecture Hall of the National School of Administration, and the Party School of the Municipal Committee of Beijing, the "Yangtze River Forum", the Study Group of Experts and Academicians of Hubei Province, the Service Center for Retired Personnel of the Ministry of Culture, and many other universities, academic conferences in all parts of China...... Wherever he goes, publicizes the Xianning city and the culture of Xiangyang Lake is his favorite.
Not only that, he edited the Study on the Establishment of the First County-level Red Regime in E'nan which has been widely recognized by masters of Party history such as Jin Chonghe, Jin Xiaohua, and Jin Xiaohua.
He also utilized his spare time to compile a total of seven books with more than three million words which is the first large-scale series of books in China that comprehensively reflects the experience of life in the cadre school, such as Completion of "Xiangyang Lake Culture Series", including Talking about Xiangyang Lake --- Interviews with Cultural Celebrities in Beijing (awarded the Bingxin Prose Prize and has been translated into Japanese), Chronicles of Xiangyang —Lake Memoirs of "May 7" cadre school at Xiangyang Lake of Xianning,Xiangyang Lake Poetry Collection, Studies of Xiangyang Lake Cultural , and Chengwai’s Xiangyang Lake (Episode1 and EpisodeII ); the cultural column of "Returning to Xiangyang Lake--Visiting the May 7 cadre school of the Hubei Ministry of Culture” in the People's Pictorial, which projected by Li chengwai and the secretary of the Party Committee of Wuhan University at the time, has produced certain repercussions at home and abroad.
Xiao Qian is not only one of cultural celebrities studied by by Li Chengwai for many years , but also one of the most brilliant stars of Xiangyang Lake culture.
In March 1969, May 7 Cadre School was founded by Cultural Ministry of China. A large number of famous writers, artists, and senior leading cadres of the cultural circle along with their families, more than 6000 people, went to the school for labor and training. The school was closed at the end of 1973 and in 1974, all the members of the school returned to Beijing. At that time, Xiao qian was also sent down to Xianning city -a rural area-- with his family. After his return to Beijing, Xiao Qian wrote an affectionate inscription: "Xiangyang Lake was our refuge during the Cultural Revolution. ......
Li Chengwai began to be obsessed with Xiangyang Lake culture research from the early 1990s. He interviewed more than 500 cultural celebrities in Beijing, and gained the "forget-the-age" friendship with Xiao Qian and his wife. Therefore, Li Chengwai's over twenty years’ incessant research leads to his rare academic exchange at the Oxford University.
Nearly one hundred reports, Xiao Qian truly records the history of the European War
"This year is the 73rd anniversary of the victory of the Chinese people in the war of resistance against Japanese Aggression and the victory of the world war against fascism, and for this reason, the title of my lecture is 'Talking about Mr. Xiao Qian's Important Contributions to the European War Propaganda of World War II' to show his service to the propaganda of World War II., thus highlighting the spirit of the Chinese people's yearning for peace and justice." Li Chengwai told reporters the initial intention of this academic exchanges.
Li Chengwai introduced, from September 29, 1939 when Xiao Qian wrote an article entitled My Experience as a Criminal on a boat in Zurich (published in HongKong's Ta Kung Pao on November 13-15 ,1939) to September 16,1945 when London Chinese-British Event was published in Chongqing's Ta Kung Pao , he published 49 feature press releases of various lengths. After the victory in World War II, he published From London to Frankfurt (in Chongqing Dagongbao, December 5, 1945), which was published in the Chinese newspaper Dagongbao.
After the victory of World War II, he published a total of 11 articles including
From London to Frankfurt (in Chongqing Dagongbao, December 5-7, 1945) and The Trip to Berlin (New Road, No.1, Volume 1, 1948) . Later, We can read the article as Seven Years’ Journey in England (1936-1946) in his book A Traveler Without a Map: Memoirs of Xiao Qian. We can read a special chapter about Miscellany of the European War in Caprices on the Past (1936-1946), Meditations on Europe, Birds of Passage in North Europe, Peace Requires Vision in Study tour in Cambridge. All the articles mentioned above sufficiently proved that he had made a distinctive contribution to the propaganda for World War II.
"If you read over the feature news written by Xiao Qian, you will find that they are full of appeals for peace and justice, such as A Few Reminders for the San Francisco Conference. For example, in Cautions to the San Francisco Conference, he says, ‘After all, the world is not a world personally owned by big and powerful countries. In an ideal world of peace, it should be like one big harmonious family, without discrimination or distinction.’ The articles like Where is Europe Going still remain a cautionary significance as well today.” Li Chengwai introduced Xiao Qian delivered many speeches calling for peace and justice back then.
Xiao Qian's articles strengthened the belief of domestic and foreign readers in the certainty of victory against fascism, and also provided an irreplaceable "factual record" of the European battlefields of World War II. Xiao Qian sent numerous feature articles to Ta Kung Pao such as The Impact of the Tiger's Den , Britain and U.S Punish Germany, The British General Election and the Future of Their Political Parties, U.S is Concerned about Unity and Counteroffensive of China , American People Wish for China’s Unity and The Political Future of Germany . They were all keenly observed, sharply written, and well analyzed, making them the main source of information for China to understand the situation in Europe and the evolution of the international situation at that time. What is more worth mentioning is that he was the first to send the news of Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov's invitation to the Chinese delegation --Song Ziwen to sign a non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union to Chungking during the UN General Assembly in San Francisco in 1945, so that Dagongbao scooped the Central News Agency and contributed to the press officers of Kuomintang (Nationalist Party--the ruling party at that time-) losing their face . Soon afterward, he went to Germany for 18 days to conduct field interviews and completed his famous feature article Late Autumn in South Germany, which has become an unparalleled account of the post-war factual record.
The "three qi" rolled in one person, the connection between "the famous journalist" Xiao Qian and Xianning Xiangyang Lake
"After more than 70 years, we review these war reports of Mr. Xiao Qian, and still have sincere admiration and immeasurable feelings. As a young Chinese journalist, his many excellent qualities are especially worthy of studying by literature, history and Party history workers. In the academic exchanges, Li Chengwai summarized Mr. Xiao Qian's charisma with three phrases with"qi"(energy).
With Yong Qi (Courage energy), Xiao Qian rushed about in the battlefield of World War II. People’s lives was in danger at all times in the smoke-filled European battlefield. When people were escaping from the chaos caused by war In August 1939, in contrast as a new reporter, he resolutely set foot on a French cruise ship and went to the battlefield in Europe, where the black clouds were looming heavily over the cities. One month later, the Second World War broke out. At that time, Xiao Qian's journalistic acumen and courage as a Chinese journalist were indeed worthy of admiration.
Cai Qi(talent energy)made Xiao Qian's writing brilliant and colorful. He graduated from the Department of Journalism of Yenching University in 1935.
Soon he became a reporter of Ta Kung Pao and participated in organizing the Hong Kong edition of Ta Kung Pao. He also covered the construction of the Yunnan-Burma Highway and wrote a feature article entitled The Yunnan-Burma Road Built with Flesh and Blood. Four years later, he was invited to lecture at the Oriental Institute of the University of London where he became a special correspondent of Ta Kung Pao in England, covering England in wartime. His writing was fresh and readable with a delicate touch, such as "Cambridge Briefs", a beautiful and sentimental essay that will be long remembered.
Zheng Qi ( Righteousness energy) strengthen Xiao Qian’s faith in the assured victory of alliance. He wrote the words as“ In the long river of history, the ultimate winners are always those who adhere to principles and have a sense of justice." in the third chapter of From"Hostile Aliens" to "Great Allies". Such assertions can be read in his war correspondences ubiquitously with the awe-inspiring righteousness showing the certain success of alliance.
“ In addition to his special role in propaganda on the battlefields of World War II, Mr. Xiao Qian had a deep affection for Hubei province and Xianning city.
In the mid-1990s, he accepted my several requests for interviews for several times and presented his inscription with pleasure :’ Deeply Missed Xianning city and Xiangyang Lake’. He also wrote to me many times, encouraging me to do a good job in the cause of literature and history. After Mr. Xiao Qian passed away, his wife, Mrs. Wen Jieruo, a famous translator, transferred me the suitcase (taken to May 7 Cadre School in Xianning city later) Mr. Xiao brought back from the battlefield in Europe." Li Chengwai told journalists that he transferred the case to the Archives of Xian'an District, Xianning City June of this year, which is not only a centerpiece of the archive, but also a witness that Chinese journalists have made prominent service to the propaganda of the European battlefield of World War II.
Finally, Li Chengwai improvised a poem "remembering the reporter of World War II --Xiao Qian", ending his speech:
I thought of Xiao Qian as soon as I arrived in London.
During the Second World War.
He was stationed in England as a reporter for Ta Kung Pao.
He used his pen to grab exclusives and controversial issues.
He used his pen to pray for peace, promote justice and celebrate victory.
Behind the glamour, who can understand the suffering he endured during his seven years in Europe?
In retrospect,
He used his pen
To penetrate the smoke of gunpowder,
he has already set up a theory in his writing unconsciously,
Note: "Establishment of merit, virtue, and theory" is the highest standard of conduct in the world put forward by "Tso Chuan"(a commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals).
This academic exchange at the University of Oxford not only allowed overseas scholars to gain a comprehensive understanding of Xiao Qian and recognize the writer --Li chengwai from Xianning city, but also get to know the Xianning city ---a beautiful city with sweet-scented osmanthus and hot spring.
