The legend of Chinese New Year
There is a story about the origin of Chinese New Year.
A monster was named “Nian” with sharp teeth and horns. It could eat people and animals before the beginning of a new year. One day, a beggar came to a man’s house for a meal. The beggar said: he could protect the man from the “Nian”. Then he put up red paper on the doors and windows, burnt bamboo and fireworks at night. When the monster heard the terrible noise and saw the light, it fled back to the mountain. Therefore, “Guo Nian” means that people survive from the “Nian”.
