The festival originated from ancient agricultural practices and worship of the moon. Legend has it that a beautiful lady named Chang'e flew to the moon and resides there with her rabbit companion.

People celebrate by gathering with family, eating mooncakes (a traditional pastry filled with sweet fillings like lotus seed paste or red bean paste), and appreciating the full moon. Lanterns are also hung or carried, symbolizing brightness and prosperity.
