Focus on the Core Competence, Shape the Cultural Character!

On the afternoon of November 15, 2017, three English workshops for junior high , together with Xi' an Crazy English School, gathered in NO. 1 Middle School , Weicheng District, and held an intercultural communication activity between Chinese and foreign teachers! The goal of the activity is to promote intercultural communication between the members of the workshops and foreign friends, and to promote the teaching level of the members through the listening and evaluation sessions with foreign teachers. The members who participated in the activity were Victor , Director of Crazy English School in Xi' an, with his team, and Simon , an experienced foreign teacher , presented a demonstration class to us today. Besides, Liu Juan, the director of Liu Juan Workshop, Ms Yinyu,the director of Yinyu Workshop, Ms Zhou Wenhua, the director of Zhou Wenhua Workshop, and most of the members of Liujuan Workshop and some of the members from the other two workshops also participated in the activity. The event was hosted by Ms. Liu Juan in English.

The theme of the activity is: Focus on the core competence, shape the cultural character! The content of the public class is about Unit 3, Lesson 16 Happy Thanksgiving from the first book in Grade 8 published by Hebei Education Press . The teaching aim is to guide the students to repay their parents with love & the other people around ! Four teachers successfully interpreted the core competent goal of English class and shaped students to be grateful by their own unique public classes!

At the beginning of the activity,four teachers presented their public classes with the same content.The first one is Ms. Hui Lingling, from Yinyu Workshop & Qianghua Middle School ,starting the lesson with guess games. Through talking about the two different fall festivals home & abroad, she turned to the topic of thanksgiving; The students always took an active part in the tasks under the guidance of Ms Hui. Next is Wei Shumei ,who is from Fengyi Middle School of Xingping Town,also a member of Zhou Wenhua Workshop, gets good comments on her board design named thanksgiving tree.The third is Simon , a foreign teacher who has worked for 40 years and is still full of enthusiasm in teaching. What Simon impressed us is his teaching style and his attitude to students.Simon drew students' attention by coming up to each student with small steps & warm greetings & a smile during the class! The diversity of interaction attracts students to participate completely! In this way Simon tells us that students should be the owner for a class . What we must do is to let students move! The last teacher, Zhang Ya, a part of Liu Juan Workshop ,is from Daonan School Weicheng District. The highlight in the class is her courage to create classroom stress ! Ms. Zhang focused on guiding students to naturally generate learning contents, and making students experience English in DIY. By observing the successful presentation of the four teachers, I get to experience what the motto really means,“One minute on the stage, ten years under the stage! ”What amazing performance the four teachers showed us ! Fluent oral English, unique teaching designs and colorful classroom activities which they presented at the beginning of activities must be a special gift on Thanksgiving to us all!

Lesson observation and evaluation among teachers is an effective way to communicate, learn from each other and enhance teaching art.So the second part is the lesson evaluation link,which is comments on four public classes. The first specialist is Ms. Cao Shujuan , from Weicheng District Teaching Research Department & a provincial teaching expert , she affirmed the four teachers' excellent basic skills, and their respective highlights. The focus that we have to solve is to think about the details of students' activities, such as how team work can be organized? Is the student communicating in English? How can the team work save time and so on. I think that Ms. Cao 's in-depth comments will take root in the future teaching, improving the overall English teaching in Xianyang city! This is the meaning of huddle growth! As Ms.Cao just finished her comments, another provincial teaching expert &provincial academic leader, Ms. Zhou Wenhua emphasized the importance of huddle growth again! Here is what Ms Zhou told us ,“Every teacher scatters like a little star all over the sky, when gathering like a fire. ” That's true. In the family of the workshop, each of us is a fire that can lead English teaching go further. Ms. Zhang Li, also a provincial teaching expert warned that in the middle of English teaching , we should not simply hand in the teaching materials, but use the teaching materials to teach. One of the biggest gains of this event is listening to the comments from Crazy English teacher Simon, who gave us a lot of teaching advice, for example,classroom activities should be done by each student, we had better teach more English in practice and so on. Finally, Ms Liu Juan thanked the four teachers for their special performance and she quoted Bernard shaw's famous saying to inspire us : " if you have an apple, I have an apple and we exchange with each other, we still have only one apple. If you have an idea, I have an idea, and we exchange our ideas with each other, each of us has two ideas, or even more !”

Finally, thank the president of Crazy English School, Victor and his senior fellow Simon, and the postgraduate from Shaanxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Zhao Yu, for bringing us a wide range of intercultural communication! Thank Ms Liu Juan for such hard work to provide all of us the growth platform ,Also thank you for leading us to the meaningful teaching collision! I am convinced that all the teachers will take this event of the intellectual spark to enlighen their teaching palace!
